Just In: Exciting news for Rewilding!

What happened: A Netherlands-based museum and research centre is buying carbon dioxide removal credits generated by a rewilding project in the UK to offset emissions from employee travel in 2023.

Credits: The Naturalis Biodiversity Center is paying €100 ($109) a tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent for the credits, which have been sourced by @Treeconomy from Nattergal's Boothby Wildland project in Lincolnshire, England.

For Nature: The Boothby project, which covers 617 hectares, is on former arable land and is being returned to natural vegetation over three years, including the reintroduction of several

And then: Once natural vegetation has a chance to re-establish, primarily through natural regeneration, free-roaming animals will be introduced to kickstart dynamic natural processes and continue the work of soil and habitat restoration. This will include wild horses, beavers and foxes.

Financially sustainable? As well as the sale of rewilding credits, Nattergal hopes to generate revenues through nature-based enterprises including camping and glamping, as well as visitor guided walks and safaris.

For NatureTech: A potential boost for Nature Data startups - Treeconomy said baseline work has been conducted to measure carbon and biodiversity metrics using its monitoring technology. More projects of this nature = more demand for Nature measurement, verification and reporting startups.

Significance: This purchase is particularly significant because, until now, rewilding projects have struggled to receive access to carbon-based financing. This sets a precedent for future funding and promoting rewilding projects globally.
