[5-minute read]

Good Morning! and welcome to our 251(!) new readers

Are mushrooms really that magic? ๐Ÿ„

When it comes to their climate & nature impact they live up to the name, finding use-cases in sustainable construction, luxury fashion & plant-based meat alternatives, all while playing an essential role in the soilโ€™s ability to retain ~75% of the Earthโ€™s terrestrial carbon.

We took a look at the start-ups putting the fun back into fungi (...too far?)

In todayโ€™s edition:

๐Ÿ”ฎ What really makes mushrooms so magic?

๐Ÿ„ We mapped out the hottest startups in this space

๐Ÿ„ The Fungi Market Map

The living world is connected by a vast kingdom of life we are only just beginning to discover.

Fungi are so much more than mushrooms - everywhere you look there are stories unfolding around fungi.

They connect all life in the forest but of all the fungal species on earth weโ€™ve only described about 5%

Fungi have the chemical arsenal to break down plastic, grow new materials and restore soil health globally butโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ we risk losing entire branches of the tree of life to extinction - weโ€™re burning the library.

So, naturally, we had to make a market map of the innovators capitalising on their incredible abilities . Hereโ€™s how we broke it down:

๐Ÿ‘œ 1. Materials & Manufacturing: sustainable alternatives to materials used in packaging, fashion, construction and other applications using mushroom technology.

๐Ÿชด2. Soil: using fungi to replenish soil-health, increase carbon sequestration & re-wild depleted natural ecosystems.

๐Ÿ” 3. Food & Nutrition: mushroom-based alternatives to animal-based meat & dairy products.

  1. Ecovative (New York, USA)
